Here’re some photos of my lip balm operation. This is my 3rd year making lip balm to give away for x-mas. I haven’t tried this year’s recipe yet, cause I’m afraid if I use one, later I’ll wish I hadn’t because there’ll be someone I want to give it to. But I am optimistic that it’s my best batch yet.
My recipe is 4 oz of beeswax, 6 oz of grapeseed oil and 6 oz of sweet almond oil (though in the pics, it’s doubled).
If you would like to try it at home, you’ll first want to set out your open containers . . .

-
melt the beeswax slowly, in a pot . . .

-
add the oils . . .

-
stir . . .

-
pour from pot into a vessel with a pour spout, from that, pour the melted balm into desired containers . . .

-
allow them to cool/harden . . .

-
before trying any fancy tricks like this!

POW!
-
If you would like to incorporate a bit of arithmetic, find the sum of ounces of the ingredients to figure how many containers you’ll need. For instance, the above recipe will yield 16 ounces of balm, so you’ll either need 16 one-ounce containers or 32 half-ounce containers (again, in the pictures, I doubled the recipe). I skipped this step last year and the year before and found relief in exercising more precision this year, ie. it was nice not having to run around the house searching for more containers (not really) suitable for lip balm as the remnants of the batch cooled/hardened in the vessel with the pour spout. Heh, heh.
Happy x-mas making!

Fun! I have wanted to make that for the last few years… but haven’t! I wish I lived closer I’d come over and snag me one:)
Jennifer,
I would love to try to make this lip balm. Most lip balms have soybean oil in them, which I am allergic to, or menthol, which dries out my lips. I don’t know much about beeswax other than for making candles. Is there a certain type of beeswax I should buy?? One day, I’d like to introduce myself and how I found your blog. That will take some time. Thanks for your help about the beeswax! ~Andrea
I got my beeswax from Mother’s Market. I believe it is all the same whether for candles or cosmetics. I guess you should just makr sure it is 100% beeswax, nothing added. I hope this balm works for you and I definitely hope to meet you and learn about the path that brought you here :)
Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for the beeswax info. I live in a small Texas town, so I ordered some beeswax online. About finding your blog, the easiest way to answer that is I found it linked up to Sid’s FB page. I am not one of his “friends.” I tried to search for Sid’s mom & sister on FB, but had no luck. I only found him and his bro. We use to play at their house as kids. I was bummed he did not remember us. I am sure his mom & sister would. But, I am now wondering if they’d even remember us. (I know their names, just didn’t want to put them here.) That was more that 20 yrs ago. It would be neat to share more, but this is such a small space. I’m glad to see how Sid’s life turned out-Christian! I am too! I am at least happy to have found your cool blog.
Well isn’t that interesting! Good luck with the lip balm, and if you’re interested in more body care recipes look for a book called Organic Body Care Recipes, the author is Tourles. Don’t feel too bad that Sid didn’t remember you, he’s not great with names, he remembers stories, tattoos, faces, things like that.
Jennifer,
Thank you for letting me know about the book. I’ll have to find a copy. I began to wonder where you got the recipe, but didn’t want to bother you by asking. Congratulations on your new pregnancy. Pregnancy is such an amazing miracle, but I also know how fragile they are. Enjoy! Hope you’re not feeling any morning sickness.
