the resident artisans

One night, not long ago, I got to watch this guy or gal put up the evening’s hang out/food trap. It’s just too amazing witnessing that these itsy bitsy beings are programmed to execute a sort of hybrid of crocheting and weaving . . .
theweaver
. . . first laying down the framework then spiraling in, round and round, pulling and placing the silky, sticky thread manufactured by its very own body . . .
weaver
. . . to complete its beautiful, utilitarian creation . . .

. . . deadly to any unassuming by-flyer.

This one was done with his/her construction phase long before and simply chilled, though on alert, in the midst of the glory of its grand tapestry.

A Girlie Day

And another time when Jonny was busy, the girls and I spent the day at Strands, down in my beloved hometown, Dana Point. (Notice how Aveline has on the same lovely outfit this day as she did on our Girlie Night?)

Looking back on this day I wonder, what the heck am I gonna do with myself when these children of mine are grown? Could anything sound even remotely fun or interesting, when I’ve known the pleasure of spending a silvery day on the shore with two beautiful, friendly, playful mermaids?

A Girlie Night

Jonny was away at a sleepover. June, Ave and I were ready for some girlie time! First activity on the list? Nectarine Golden Cake.

Before the cake was done, Miss June went to sleep. The cake came out and Ave and I chose The Princess Diaries as our girlie cinema selection.
It was really good! I ate way too much :)

The movie wasn’t quite enough entertainment for us, so as it played we built a dollhouse with blocks and set it all up.

This is Ave’s favorite photo, a closeup of our mini-friends. When she saw this picture on my camera she said, “Mom you have to put this on your blog!” Yes Ma’am.
I too, love this image! There's just something about it that brings out the little girl in me.

Dreaming of lazy Summer days . . .

. . . How is it that they have all passed?

Halloween in August

At the thrift store one day, the girlies had both picked out something to buy. Jonny was in a conundrum, he really wanted something too, but nothing looked cool enough to him . . . Until he spied some unopened Halloween makeup. He got it and here are the photos he took of the spookiness it brought into our home, along with quotes from the subjects themselves.

Oh, how I’ve been missing this!

We started school, so blogging time has been nil. But, so far school is going well! It has not been without its challenges, some of which I expect to be ongoing for much of the year, actually. But I’m done freaking out about stuff, so I think we’re gonna have a great year.

For anyone who is interested, the curriculum we are using this year is as follows:

*Mathematics: Math on the Level, from Family Lifestyle Learning

*Science: Exploring Creation with Astronomy, from Apologia

*History/Geography: The Story of the World Vol. 2: The Middle Ages, from Peace Hill Press

*Language: BOB Books for Jonny and basic alphabet work for Aveline. They also both draw a picture in a journal every day and then write something about their drawing. Aveline copies one word of her choosing and Jonny writes, with guidance, one or two sentences of his choosing.

*We read Bible Stories from The Golden Children’s Bible and we read poems from A Family of Poems compiled by Caroline Kennedy.

All of the programs we’re doing this year offer such great flexibility and ideas for taking it further. I recommend all of them, if that ever changes, I’ll amend that statement here.

Here are a couple of photos from our project last week, to go deeper into our study of the Celts. We made Double-Headed Celtic War Axes!

And, what the hay, here’s a drawing I did during my students’ journal drawing time one day.
